Your Bio

Hi. I live in Millis, Massachusetts about 25 miles SW of Boston. I started taking photography seriously at the end of August, 2006 when I took a photography course in Pingree Park, Colorado, in the Rockies. Since then I've traveled with Nature Photography Adventures to Peru, the Oregon Cascades and Coast, Belize, Tanzania, Gustavus, Alaska, and Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation. In Feb 10 - Mar 6, 2009, I traveled to Patagonia in Argentina and Chile, Atacama desert, and Easter Island. I welcome comments and am always looking to try to improve my photography.

Atacama Desert in Chile : A Nature Photography Adventure. These are scenes from the northern high desert Atacama region, one of the driest places on earth. The gallery begins at the Valley de Luna, a lunar-like landscape of eroded salt-rock formations. Then there are several photos of the Tatio Geysers, which are 14,100 ft above sea level. We left San Pedro about 5 AM for a two-hour winding road trip to arrive at sunrise. It was 20 degrees. There were bus loads of people to watch the about 100 geysers, which start their show just before sunrise. It begins to die down about an hour or so later. Then everyone goes to swim in the thermal poos and the fun for us starts as we see the gorgeous and artistic gurgles happening around us. It was hard to drag ourselves away -- we stayed long after our guide was ready for us to leave.

Another day, we toured all over a salt lakes area and is saw some of the most exquisite mountain and lake scenery I have ever seen. On our way there, we spent some time walking through a village that was under construction by the Chilean govt. Chile is certainly a place I long to revisit.

Torres del Paine and Eco Camp : A Nature Photography Adventure. Torres del Paine in the Southwestern part of Chile comprises a mountain system independent from the Patagonian Andes range. We stayed 4 nights at the Ecocamp right at the foot of the towers that you see from many perspectives in the photos in this album. This claims to be the only ecolodging in Patagonia. Ecocamp follows a sustainable design model, obtaining all energy from natural and renewable sources, recycling waste and so on. This album contains only a small number of the many photos I took at this location.

El Calafate and the Perito Moreno Glacier : A Nature Photography Adventure. El Calafate is a town in the Patagonian Andes in the Southwest of Argentina. Bordering a glacial lake, the town looks like it's in the Swiss Alps. We stayed at Estancia Alice, on Lago Argentino surrounded by golden fields and foothills with high snowcapped mountains in the distance. Lago Argentino is one of Argentina's largest lakes. The estancia is a sheep farm and is a lovely place to stay. Thirty two miles away along the shore of Peninsula Magallanes is Los Glaciares National Park where we spent a day walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier and photographing the glacier from the boat we took to get there and from a long viewpoint very near the glacier. The walk was amazing -- more strenuous than the one Doug and I took in Alaska '03 and with far less equipment. We got some good shots of a crevasse and what the area looks like from the vantage point of the glacier. Near the end of the walk, we were treated to a different kind of "shot" -- whiskey. Then we stumbled back down the rest of the way off the glacier. It was glorious! This album records some of those experiences but photography can communicate only a part of what it is truly like to be there -- one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. And the glacier experience was ecstatic.

Peninsula Valdes, a Nature Photography Adventure : Feb. 16 and 17. Peninsula Valdes provides the finest wildlife viewing in Patagonia. The Falkland Current provides food for elephant seals and huge sea lions. This area is the breeding grounds for both species. Also there are migratory shore birds, maras (rodents), guanacos, rheas, hairy armadillos, and grey foxes. We spent quite a bit of time hanging out with the elephant seals on the shore near to where we were staying at a delightful estancia (ranch) far from other humans. Then we traveled around the Peninsula. It was amazing.

Magellanic Penguins at Punta Tombo : A Nature Photography Adventure. Feb. 15, 2009. Punta Tombo is on the South Atlantic shore and is home to these penguins from September through April. The rest of the year, they are at sea. The male arrives first and repairs the nest, usually the same one every year. The females arrive, there's a short courtship, and then mating occurs. Chicks are born in November. Male and female share equally in child rearing. -- To get there, we flew from Buenos Aires to Trelew. The next morning we drove about two hours.

Iguazu Falls, a Nature Photography Adventure : Feb. 11-13, 2009. Iguazú Falls in Northern Argentina on the border with Brazil. We visited only the Argentinian side and stayed at the only hotel in the national park. Over a mile wide, the falls plunge 260 ft. These photos were taken with my backup camera a Nikon D-80 as my main camera got drenched the first afternoon there when we walked out to Devils Point and encountered a downpour of epic proportions.

Rapa Nui, a Nature Photography Adventure : Rapa Nui (Easter Island) is 2,360 miles from Santiago, Chile. You'll see a few of over 900 Moai or statues that rest throughout the island. These are basalt statues and are unique to this island. At its maximum length/width, Rapa Nui is 15 miles and 8 miles wide. The most widely accepted opinion is that Rapa Nui was first populated about 500 AD by Polynesians. There the people lived in isolation for some 1,200 years and developed the only writing system in all of Polynesian -- Rongo Rongo. Everyone lives in one village, Hanga Roa. Horses on Rapa Nui are allowed to have the run of the place and you can see them everywhere. You see horses roaming freely throughout the island. These aren't wild horses. All of them are owned by island inhabitants.
